The Evolution of Star Wars: Ewoks

The Evolution of Star Wars: Ewoks

Ewoks was an amazing series that won the hearts of millions of children. The way the adventures of Ewoks were presented were so entertaining to make your childhood so memorable. But do you know how the series evolved? Of course, it’s exciting to know.

It was produced by Nelvana, an entertainment company specifically working for kids’ content. The series was based on the Star Wars movie. It represented tiny characters making efforts for their worthy missions. Unlike the general movies, the plot and fictional background were up to the next level. Thus, the movie got higher ratings. The reason for it getting viral was also the superb character representation.

The company observed the series and determined to convert the real-life characters into animated characters to proffer surprise and a lot of fun for children. The creator George Lucas had a core interest in animation. He worked with great passion and hard work, demonstrated clearly in his writing.

The cartoon featured the Ewok characters displayed in Star Wars Episode six named Return of Jedi. Then, it further explored the Caravan of Courage and The Battle for Endor. Two seasons were launched with 35 episodes.

Ewoks were fictional species that inhabited the forest moon of Endor and lived in simple dwellings, especially huts. The first season explored the initial adventures of Ewoks with the theme song “Ewok Celebration.” It was so catchy and unique as the new one was sung for the next season.

The looks of Ewoks were so exciting due to their tiny height and some unexpected figures. Especially those who loved smurfs were definitely in love with these fictional characters.

Wicket W. Warrick was the main character of the animation. He was the male Ewok and the youngest brother of his family. His appearance was shown in both seasons. He was determined and headstrong and often contributed to initiating any task. He wanted to become a super warrior, and that passion invited problems for him.

Wicket’s main concern was to achieve maturity in the community. In that mission, he took a series of adventures with his squad. The squad included Knessa, Teebo, and Latara.

Knessa’s character evolved from Princess Ewok’s female character introduced in the movie. She was honoured as a Princess of Bright Tree Village. Later, she owned the status of the Chieftainess of Bright Tree Village when she married Wicket.

She had a great youthfulness with her friend circle and was considered the most mature member of her group. She was used to challenging her father in some disputes, such as participating secretly in the lighting of the Tree of Light with Latara. She had many adventures on the forest moon of Endor. She lost her sister and mother but didn’t become alone due to her loving friends. However, she wished for their return as soon as possible.

Latara was another female Ewok. Her appearance changed slightly in the second season, especially her furs. She loved spending time with Kneesaa; thus was her best friend. She was a sister of Wiley and Nippet but wanted to be a princess. Therefore craved attention and acted like that. Later, she desired to join the Travelling Jindas with such a high passion that she went with them, leaving her Bright Tree Village behind. However, her strategy failed, and she returned to her village.

Her main job was to look after her younger siblings, but she had another special talent. That was why she was appreciated like Kneesaa. As an aspiring musician, she played sounds through her flute with Wicket and Teebo.

The appearance of Teebo was fascinating as he evolved from the special movie character well-designed to appear like a threatening wild animal, especially her ochre furs that grabbed detailed attention. He was a Force-sensitive Ewok male and Wicket’s best friend. He was a little dreamer but often became a little clumsy. He was not much disciplined, but he learned mastering over time from Logray and appeared as a respectful young Ewok. He was initially a scout but became a respected warrior in the Bright Tree Village on the Forest Moon of Endor.

Logray was a highly inspired character who deserved great respect for his activities. He was a male Ewok who worked to ensure his tribe remained in harmony with spirits that inhabited Endor’s forest. He always tried to help other Ewoks by guiding their best way to succeed in their missions. He was also suspicious of all evils trying to invade their village. That was reinforced when Imperial troops arrived. Various enemies, like Duloks and Morag, were introduced along with their rival species.

The Ewoks who initially lived in the peace found them in a constant battle with Duloks, who were their own cousins inhabiting the Endor’s swamps. Honestly, we loved the Duloks’ appearance more attractive than Ewoks. That’s due to their in-depth structures designed on their tall body.

Dulok’s tribe included various negative characters always trying to irritate comfort-loving Ewoks. The tribe of King Gorneesh and his wife were so clever as to make evil plans again and again. They tried harassing Ewoks by forming alliances with more powerful beings like Morag. Other prominent characters living in this tribe included Murgoob and Umwak, who made good deals to accomplish their evil plans.

Morag was an evil witch inhabited by the Forest Moon of Endor. She was affiliated with the expanded Star Wars Universe and used the dark side of her forces to stimulate phenomena and events to harm Evoke’s life.
The character was written very well. She was the very first dark Jedi to appear in the star-expanded universe. Her events occurred through stone forms and lava that were extremely nightmare fuel that contributed to her mission of killing the Ewoks. She was the only dark Jedi that didn’t consider lightsabers in her roles. Her rivalry with Master Logray was so interesting for the audience, especially for those who love Scrooge McDuck’s rivalry with Magica de spell, as they are much similar.

The disappearance of Morgan just after four episodes was so disappointing for her fans. However, they compromised on seeing it as the evil protagonist in comic books. Unlike Emperor Palpatine, Darth Vade, and other evil characters, she was the darkest villain ever to be shown in the kids’ shows.

The first season successfully ended with 13 episodes. The last episode was so memorable that Wicket and Kneesaa found Asha, Knessa’s long-lost sister. They helped her repel the Duloks’ hunting creatures before making her alliance with Chief Chirpa.

The audience’s love inspired the creative team to extend the story. So, the second season finally premiered on September 13, 1986, with the episodes “The Wish Plant” and “The Crystal Cloak” on ABC. Some characters disappeared to background cameos, while some were exaggerated. The episodes were shorter and paired together in a telecast. The season was much updated and better, especially the new song “Friends Together, Friends Forever”, which was highly appreciated. The content was also not duplicated as done in the first season.
Sue Murphy did an awesome job as the voiceover behind humorously materialistic Latara. The four main Ewoks had good chemistry and made children compare them with the characters and their relations.

In the first season, it was so fun for the audience to see Ewoks being able to communicate in English. However, in the second season, there was just a Wicket living in a world of dreams. He wanted nothing but to become a warrior. His hood was updated from orange to green to give children a new feel. Unfortunately, it was not exciting for everyone.

His magical crystal could turn anything into the crystal he once touched. The monsters played a fantastic role as the negative protagonist. They tried to irritate Ewoks in different ways, like pressuring them for money.
Various exciting events occurred, like the episodes where the leaf queen assigned Kneesa the task of caring for a wish plant, but her friends abused that plant in excitement. The season finally ended in the 26th episode, in which Malani desired to join the Warrior games, but some thieves arrived at the location to grab the SunStar.

So, that was all about the evolution of the Ewoks series. We hope so you loved the way we presented your childhood in front of you from the beginning of this series to the successful end.

A large number of the audience watched the series and shared great feedback. It was more fun for those who had already watched the Star Wars movie. They get inspired by the character representation, background voices, & scenes, and the story’s flow without feeling like there was nothing to watch when they already knew the story. Don’t regret if you missed this series in your time. Both seasons have been available to many people since they got included in Disney+ under the Star Wars Vintage banner.
